What changes in 2027
On 20 January 2026, the government announced that from 2027, children may enter Year 1 at age 6 (5+), alongside those aged 7. Early entry is not compulsory: parents can choose whether their child starts at 6 or at 7.1
At first, the Ministry of Education planned a diagnostic test to check these children's readiness.2 On 27 January 2026, the Prime Minister told Parliament that the test would not go ahead. Instead, children's progress would be monitored by teachers and parents.3
This means parents who want to send their 5+ child to Year 1 in 2027 can do so without any screening.
Why parents should check first
In my view, the screening does not have to be done by teachers. But at the very least, parents need to find out and make sure their child is ready for the Year 1 syllabus.
Parents' cooperation matters. A child's readiness cannot be left 100% to teachers.
The problem is that most parents do not know what to check. They need a simple tool to see for themselves whether their five-year-old is ready, and what to do at home if not yet. That is why I built Ready for Year 1? (Bersedia untuk Tahun 1?), to help parents, and teachers too.
What is inside
Ready for Year 1? is a free website that works on a phone. Every skill comes from the Preschool Curriculum 2026 (KP2026) used in Ministry of Education preschools.
- Checklists for Bahasa Melayu, English and Maths. Mark each skill: Not yet, Sometimes, or Yes.
- A guide for every skill: what it means, why it matters for Year 1, and short games with words you can say to your child straight away.
- Play-together games and worksheets to print.
Ten minutes a day is enough. And if your child is still "not yet" on a skill, that is normal. The guide shows the next step.

Start with the checklist. It takes a few minutes, and it does not test your child.
